In many countries human rights defenders face enormous dangers: They risk their freedom, their security and often their lives. They are unjustly accused and imprisoned. But if they want to enter the EU, their special situation is not taken into account - sometimes even interpreted in a negative way.
Yesterday the Global Monitor for Human Rights and Democracy, which I initiated, went online. 162 countries, hundreds of interactive graphs and a regularly updated database that shows everyone in the world how fundamental rights are being curtailed due to the Corona pandemic - all this is included in the Monitor.
I have proposed to the EU Commission the creation of a monitor for human rights, with which one can trace restrictions of fundamental rights in the Corona crisis. Tomorrow this proposal will become reality.
Together with Lina Khatib, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme of London's "Chatham House" and Bente Scheller, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Department of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin, I discussed the role of the EU in the Middle East.
