EU Annual Report: Respect for human rights must become the top priority of foreign policy

Why do trade agreements protect companies but not people? Why do EU manufacturers still sell arms to warmongers? And why are EU companies still destroying the habitat of indigenous peoples just to mine coal? The EU Annual Report on Human Rights shows how our policies affect people around the world. We need to make a greater effort and set a good example – especially when the situation of indigenous peoples deteriorates. As shadow rapporteur, I called for this in Parliament on Tuesday.

The alarming report is supported by a large majority of MEPs and sends a clear signal to the Commission: it is now up to foreign affairs commissioner Josep Borrell in particular to shape an EU foreign and security policy that puts human rights at the top of the agenda over the next five years.
